Flashing On Roof Lifting

Once you have determined the flashing does indeed need to be sealed gently lift the shingles laid on top of the flashing so you can reseal them.

Lift the shingles that are near the valley flashing. The edge of the roof has thin metal flashing that helps water drip off the roof without damaging the home or causing a leak. The flashing is located at intersection points on your roof in spots such as peaks and valleys where water is likely to collect and pool. Apply roofing cement 6 inches from the edge below the shingles.

Step 5 seal vent flashing. Apply enough bead as determined by you between the vent pipe and the flashing. It is important to take great care in lifting the shingles because you don t want to cause any damage. Use a caulking gun to seal the vent flashing.

Seal the seam between the cap and step flashing with urethane roofing cement or silicone caulking compound as shown at right. Step 4 generously apply roof cement. Step 3 gently lift the shingles.

If you are working with valley flashing lift the edges of the surrounding shingles and spread roofing cement on the flashing about 6 inches in from the edge of the shingles. Then spread the roofing cement under the shingles that are surrounding it.

While some skylight manufacturers include flashing in their products sometimes roofing professionals have to create it or purchase it separately.
